The 54th New York City Marathon is in the books, and what a race it was. Nearly 60,000 runners took to the streets of the Big Apple, and near-perfect weather conditions meant that times were fast and racing was fierce.
We got to witness both historically-fast and historically-close races, as three women broke the 22-year-old course record and the men’s race was decided by a photo finish, the smallest margin in the race’s history. Hellen Obiri is now a two-time champ—winning first in 2023 and again in 2025—and Benson Kipruto claimed his fourth World Marathon Major title by mere inches.
For the second time this year, Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi claimed the top two spots on a World Marathon Major podium. In April, Lokedi held off Obiri to claim her first Boston Marathon title as both shattered the course record. Once again, Obiri and Lokedi (plus third-placer Sheila Chepkirui, the 2024 champ) worked together to run the fastest time in New York history. Only this time, Obiri turned the tables on her rival with a blistering final 800 meters and a 2:19:51 victory.
For those watching along on the CITIUS MAG YouTube broadcast, Chris Chavez came very close to ending up on “Old Takes Exposed.” With about half a mile to go in the men’s race, he called Benson Kipruto as the race winner. Kipruto, the Paris bronze medalist and a three-time World Marathon Major winner, had survived the whittling down of the lead pack over the second half and found himself in the driver’s seat in Central Park, putting the hurt on 2024 London champ Alexander Mutiso Munyao.
There was only one problem: with 200 meters left in the race, Mutiso found one last gear and began to reel Kipruto back in. Kipruto was focused on navigating the slight uphill finish of New York’s and only realized Mutiso was so close in the final steps, turning on one last burst of speed to stay ahead of his challenger. It was a true photo finish, as 0.3 seconds separated the duo and both men were credited with a time of 2:08:09.

The women’s 5000m had everything — the last four global champions, the world record holders over 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, and 5km, and a whole bunch of runners with more global medals they can count. But even with so many proven commodities in the field, the final still managed to surprise. A moderate early pace seemed to be playing perfectly into reigning World champ Faith Kipyegon’s hands, and as she moved to the lead with a mile to go, it seemed like smooth sailing. But 2022 World champ Gudaf Tsegay wasn’t going to let her control the race without a fight — literally — as the Ethiopian cut in on her rival on a straightaway with more than a few elbows thrown. But Kipyegon held the inner line and when she unleashed her trademark finishing kick in the final lap, gold seemed assured. But her countrywoman Beatrice Chebet, the reigning World XC champ and a formidable middle-distance runner in her own right, and after claiming a silver in 2022 and a bronze in 2023, she finally had the right tools at the right time to outkick Kipyegon and claim her first global gold on the track. The 24-year-old Chebet is as much a generational talent as anyone, and with a world record in the 10,000m earlier this spring and continued success in cross-country, it seems like she may have ascended to an even higher level. Kipyegon still got a silver medal — initially — and Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan managed to snag a bronze at the start of her 5000m-10,000m-marathon triple. Then the news came via the results page that Kipyegon, not Tsegay, had been disqualified for the contact earlier in the race, and Italian Nadia Battocletti, who ran an incredible race in her own right to take fourth, had been upgraded. Anyone who watched the replay was confused, to say the least: Kipyegon had neither instigated the contact nor moved out of her spot on the rail, so why was she being cited? A few hours later, justice was served and Kipyegon was reinstated. But as both the Kenyan and her sparring partner Tsegay are back in a few short hours to match up in the 1500m, the not-so-friendly rivalry will certainly continue to play out over the next three rounds and four days of racing. Day four of track and field at the Paris Olympics delivered! From Mondo Duplantis resetting his own world record (yet again) to the chaos of Faith Kipygeon being disqualified and later reinstated as the women’s 5000m silver medallist, today was a memorable one. In tonight’s edition of Torch Talk, we dive into all of the highlights from another action-packed day…
– Mondo Duplantis broke the pole vault world record for the ninth time in his career en route to winning his second straight Olympic gold in the event. Sam Kendricks took silver after clearing 5.95m, and Emmanouil Karalis finished in bronze with 5.90m.
– Beatrice Chebet took home Olympic gold in a chaotic women’s 5000m race in 14:28.56. After originally being DQed, Chebet’s countrywoman Faith Kipyegon took silver and Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan won bronze in the first of her three finals at these Games.
– Keely Hodgkinson won the women's 800m crown with her time of 1:56.72. She is the 3rd British woman to claim this title. 2023 World Champion Mary Moraa took bronze, and Tsige Duguma won Ethiopia's first ever Olympic 800m medal with her silver.
–Valarie Allman won her second straight Olympic gold in the women's discus with a best mark of 69.50m. Allman is one of only three women in history to successfully defend her Olympic title in this event. Bin Feng of China took silver and Sandra Elkasevic of Croatia took bronze.
