Inside History: A Conversation With Ky Robinson After Winning The 5k & 10k NCAA Titles

Fresh off of making history, Ky Robinson returns to the podcast!

Ky made history in Austin Texas this past June by winning the dirty double in dominate fashion. With a 54 second last lap, Ky won the 10k with teammate and former podcast guest Charles Hicks right behind in second. Just two days later, Ky ran it back (no pun-intended) and won the 5k with a 55 second last lap cementing himself in history as one of the few to win the double.

For those who aren't familiar with Ky, he is an accomplished athlete with numerous achievements in track and field. He is a multi-time All-American and has competed in the World Championships for both track and field and cross country. Ky holds multiple records at Stanford, including the steeplechase and indoor 3,000 and 5,000. He is also the record-holder for the under-20 steeplechase in Australia and Oceania. Ky has been part of championship-winning teams, such as the West Region XC team and Pac-12 XC team. In addition to his athletic success, Ky has received academic honors and awards for his outstanding performance both on and off the track.

Today's conversation is one of my favorite from the past few months. Ky breaks down his season in full and his incredible performances at NCAAs. We dive into his training, mindset, and more. We also discuss if he'll return to Palo Alto this Fall, his ambitions the rest of the season, and wearing long socks in Austin heat.

NCAA Champion Charles Hicks Turns Pro, Joins Nike Bowerman Track Club

"Even in the first week, it's just extremely apparent that this is the perfect environment for me. We've already done workouts that would pretty much have been impossible for me before, but I think it's just having so many World Championship Olympic quality guys in a train that I can just hop into and be a part of that just really elevates every athlete. A lot of people think you become the average of the people you spend the most time around–and these guys are just the absolute best in the world"

Charles Hicks who is coming off a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he finished right behind his Stanford teammate Ky Robinson.

Last November, he made history as the first runner from Stanford University to win an NCAA individual cross country title. In his four years at Stanford, he has earned multiple All-American and Pac-12 honors and titles. In addition to all of the collegiate success, he is a two-time European under-23 cross country champion while representing Great Britain.

Now, he’s ready to open a new chapter. He has decided to forego the remainder of his NCAA eligibility to turn pro, sign with Nike and join the Bowerman Track Club under coach Jerry Schumacher.

In the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast, we discuss everything about the decision, how long he’s wanted to be a pro runner, what his hopes are for representing Team GB at global championships and the future of his YouTube channel.

Inside The Mind Of Stanford's Coach Ricardo Santos: How He Coaches World Class Athletes & Teams + Coaching Charles Hicks & Ky Robinson To NCAA Titles

What does it take to be a good coach? What does it take to lead others to success? We explore these questions and many more with the one and only Coach Ricardo Santos, coach of the Stanford cross country and track teams.

Coach Ricardo Santos is an accomplished distance coach at Stanford University, where he has been the primary men's distance coach since August 2019. He has had remarkable success, including coaching Charles Hicks to become the first Stanford runner, male or female, to win an NCAA individual cross-country title in 2022. Under Santos' guidance, the Stanford men's cross-country teams have achieved 13 top-10 finishes in NCAA championships and won numerous regional and conference championships. Santos has been recognized with multiple Coach of the Year honors, including USTFCCCA West Region and Pac-12 Men's Coach of the Year in 2022. His coaching prowess extends to track events as well, with his athletes setting records and earning international recognition. Santos brings a wealth of experience to his coaching role, having previously coached at the Boston Athletic Association and Iona College.

This conversation encapsulates the subjects of what it takes to coach a successful team. We discuss culture, instilling patience, a process mindset, and what makes a good leader. We also go through his recent success with athletes Charles Hicks (who won the 2022 NCAA XC title) and Ky Robinson (who won the 2023 5k/10k Outdoor titles).

It was an absolute pleasure having a conversation with Coach Santos and dissecting his extremely successful career so far! I know you'll find value from this conversation with one of the best coaches in the world.

There's a saying, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." This perfectly describes Coach Santos, and I know you will learn from him in this conversation.

Ad Astra: The Journey To The NCAA Title With Charles Hicks | Stories, Wisdom, & Inspiration From The NCAA Champ

On November 19, 2022, Charles Hicks cemented his name into history forever. Not only did he win his first individual title, but he was the first person ever from Stanford to win an individual NCAA title on the grass. What did it take to achieve this monumental accomplishment? A lot of 105-mile weeks, years of sacrifice, belief, and so much more that we cover in today's episode of the podcast.

Charles and I sit back and have a conversation surrounding everything it took for him to achieve this dream he set out to accomplish. We discuss the ups, downs, and everything in between! We talk about all who made this possible, the race itself, Ad Astra, and how his teammates have pushed him to be the best version of himself. Needless to say, this is a must-listen podcast!

Charles and I have been trying to make a podcast happen since July, so we were both thrilled to make this come to life. I hope you all enjoy listening to our conversation as much as we did having it!

NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP: NAU AND NC STATE REPEAT; CHARLES HICKS OUTKICKS NICO YOUNG, KATELYN TUOHY RUNS BRILLIANTLY

The 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships are in the books. The NAU dynasty continues on the men's side as they finished the day with 83 points tied with Oklahoma State but then won the head-to-head tiebreaker. It marked the first time that a tiebreaker determined the national champion. Stanford's Charles Hicks outkicked Nico Young in the final stretch to claim in the men's individual title. On the women's side N.C. State became the first school to go back-to-back since Villanova in 2009 and 2010. They were led by Katelyn Tuohy, who hunted down Florida's Parker Valby despite a 12-second gap and won the women's individual title. We unpack all of the action, the biggest surprises and give some way too early 2023 picks with Isaac Wood of The Wood Report and Kyle Merber.

Stanford’s Cole Sprout Shares Reflections From His Successful Career + What He Has Planned For The Future
Many athletes run fast. Few are genuinely kind people and do good things off the track. Even fewer are both. Today’s guest, Cole Sprout, is undoubtedly both. In high school, Cole took down national records and is now crushing the competition with his team Stanford. Off the track, Cole is a genuinely great person and impacts those around him. In this conversation, Cole and I go all over the spectrum. We talk about his beginning in the start of running, what it was like to cement his legacy in Colorado, Stanford things, what he’d make Gordon Ramsay for dinner, and discuss if he’d ever steal Charles Hicks clout and start a YouTube channel. This is an enjoyable, lighthearted, and inspiring conversation! I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I did. P.S: I had the flu when I recorded with Cole, so excuse sick Dom.
