Cole Sprout returns to the podcast to breakdown his final seasons at Stanford. The long-time Cardinal, originally from Littleton, Colorado, most recently competed at the Washington-Dempsey Indoor meet on January 17 and 18 (where he came in ninth in the mile with a time of 3:57.64 and second in the 3k with a time of 7:45.24). He also threw down at the very competitive Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on December 7, 2024, where he came in 21st in the 5k with a time of 13:30.17. Cole's run at Stanford was very successful, with impressive PRs to show: he ran 1:51.79 in the 800m; 3:56.53 in the mile; 3:42.27 in the 1500m; 13:24.38 in the 5k; and 27:42.42 in the 10k. Before moving out west to compete at Stanford, Cole won the Colorado state cross country title in 2019, breaking his own meet record with a time of 15:12.7. He also came in seventh at the 2019 Nike Cross Nationals, after placing third in 2018. Cole won six Gatorade State Athlete of the Year honors – three in track and three in cross country. Cole graduated with a bachelor's from Stanford in Symbolic Systems. Showing how well-rounded a person he is, Cole has volunteered in the past with the Denver Rescue Mission–an organization that helps the homeless and those suffering through addiction with emergency services, rehabilitation, transitional programs, and community outreach. Additionally, Cole has gone on a mission trip to Ethiopia. Cole always offers great insight and wisdom, and we're excited for you to hear this latest offering from one of the sport's most insightful athletes. In today's conversation, Cole gives in-depth insights into his last six months of running, how he's going into his final two seasons at Stanford, how he views his legacy there, his plans post-college, how to overcome negative thoughts, and so much more. I love Cole and our conversations, and this was a good one. We cover a ton of topics that are relevant to your life & running journey. Tap into the Cole Sprout Special. Throughout the years, some of my favorite episodes have, funny enough, been with kids from the same high school, Valor Christian.
The man who coached these athletes is Coach Greg Coplen. After hearing so many positive things about him, I knew I needed to get him on the podcast and pick his brain.
Coach Coplen coached at Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch, CO, for 10 years and is now starting his 2nd full year at Chaparral High School in Parker, CO.
He's coached five teams in four different years, at two different schools, that finished the season in DyeStat National rankings, four of those finishing in the top 10 in the country. Throughout his tenure, he's coached state champions at nearly every event in both genders.
In his first year at Chaparral High School, he helped coach the five boys' State Champions and oversaw the emergence of the girls' cross-country team, which finished third in the state of Colorado, sixth at Nike Southwest Regionals, and 27th in the country. Before last season, the Chaparral girls had not been ranked in the top 10 in the state in over 15 years.
In today's conversation, Coach Coplen takes me through how to flip around a program in one year, how to instill excellence in your athletes, how to handle setbacks and disappointment, the lessons he's learned from coaching high-level athletes like Cole Sprout & Ashley Jones, the legacy he wants to leave behind in the sport, and much more!
This conversation was absolutely fantastic. I personally have many takeaways, and I hope you'll take the time to listen to it!

Today on the podcast is one of the most loved guests in the history of The Running Effect, Cole Sprout!
Cole runs for Stanford University (Go tree!) and is entering his final year of school there this Fall.
Cole has run 3:56 in the Mile, 13:24 in the 5k, and 27:42 in the 10k. Cole won the 2023 NACACs in the 5k, is a Five-time All-American, placed eighth in the 5,000 at the 2023 U.S. Championships, and 16th in the 10,000.
In high school, Cole became one of the greatest HS runners of all-time in Colorado history. He was the first Colorado high school runner to break 9 minutes for 3,200 in a race run in Colorado. He ran 4:02.42 in the mile in a May, 2020, when a 4:02 was like what a 3:58 is today. He won six Gatorade state athlete of the year honors – three in track and three in cross country. He also won seven state championships – doubling in the 1,600 and 3,200 in 2018 and 2019, in addition to his cross country titles.
In today's conversation, Cole and I go very deep on a plethora of subjects today relating to his running and faith. Cole speaks very openly about his faith as a Christian and we lean into that today and how it affects his running and life.
We also talk about his last year of running and his plans for the upcoming months.
Take the time to be blessed by Cole's wisdom!

The one and only Cole Sprout returns to the podcast. Cole is a junior at Stanford University, where he has slowly cemented himself as one of the top runners in the NCAA. This past indoor season, Cole ran 3:56 in the Mile, 7:43 in the 3k, and 13:24 in the 5k. Just a few weeks ago, Cole ran 28:30 in the 10k to open up his outdoor campaign. Cole is also a multi-time All-American both on the track and the grass.
Cole and I get incredibly deep in this episode and discuss a plethora of topics surrounding philosophy that relate to running such as trusting in God's plan, chasing quick fixes, is there a destination?, enjoying the ordinary moment, finding meaning in suffering, and more. We also go through Cole's recent racing and ambitions for the rest of the season!
I hope you will all tune into this episode as I know it will positively impact you, and certainly make you think deeper on questions surrounding your life and sport. I know you'll walk away from today's conversation a better version of yourself, I can certainly say that was the case for me.
So I hope you all enjoy today's podcast and find value from the subjects discussed! Feel free to drop a comment with your thoughts (:

The one and only Cole Sprout returns to the podcast. The first episode I ever did with Cole was when I had the Flu; so happy to have a conversation with him when I felt normal. Cole is a junior at Stanford University, where he has slowly cemented himself as one of the top runners in the NCAA. Just this indoor season so far, Cole has run 7:43 in the 3k and 13:24 in the 5k. Cole is also a multi-time All-American both on the track and the grass.
Today's conversation was wide-ranging and philosophical at times. Cole is an incredibly perspicacious speaker, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this conversation. He recaps his XC season, growing in faith because of it, confidence, culture, and much more. I'm extremely confident that you'll be positively impacted by listening to this conversation! I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did having it.
