Evan Jager

From American-record brilliance to a late-career grind, Evan Jager’s story has been one of constant adaptation. 

But now he’s ready to call it quits and move onto the next phase of life without running. 

The late-career push included an 8th place finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the U.S. Championships in 8:28.21 this year. He also ran the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile in September of this year and came in 19th with a 3:54.9. 

Jager originally made a name for himself when he set the 3000m Steeplechase American Record in July of 2015 with a 8:00.45. His other PRs include 13:02.40 in the 5,000m; 7:35.16 in the 3,000m; and 3:32.97 in the 1,500m. 

After one year in the NCAA ranks as a Wisconsin Badger (he came in 8th in the 1,500m at outdoors during the 2008 season), Jager turned professional. He then went on to win seven consecutive U.S. steeplechase titles from 2012–2018. 

He made his presence known on the world stage, grabbing a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Games in the 3000m steeplechase; prior to that he came in 6th at the 2012 London Games in the 3000m steeplechase.

After a serious foot injury, Jager burst back on the scene in 2022, nabbing a second place finish at the 2022 USATF outdoor games.

THE EVAN JAGER SPECIAL 

Evan Jager is one of the most decorated and accomplished runners in US Distance history.

Evan is the American Record Holder in the Steeplechase, along with the Rio Olympic Silver Medalist in the Steeple and London World Championships Silver Medalist in the Steeple. On top of these feats, Evan has won a US title at the Steeplechase SEVEN times. 

He is one of the original members of Nike's Bowerman Track Club having dropped out of college (not to sound dramatic, he was just really fast and went pro) to follow Coach Jerry Schumacher. 

Evan holds PRs of 3:32 (1500m), 8:00.45 (Steeplechase), 7:35 (3000m), and 13:02 (5000m). 

Evan is a 2xUS Olympian. 

In today's conversation, Evan takes me through his life updates which includes moving to a new country, his reflections on his 2024 season, how to deal with disappointment, how much longer he plans to run for, lessons on how to become great at the sport of running, and so much more.

Today on the podcast is the man, the myth, the legend, Evan Jager.

For those who aren't familiar with Evan, he is undoubtedly the greatest American at the 3000m Steeplechase ever. Evan won a Silver Medal in the steeplechase at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, won Bronze at the 2017 World Championships in London; he has the American Record in the 3,000m Steeplechase with a time of 8:00.45, and get this, he holds the top 9 spots on the U.S. Top 10 All-Time 3000m Steeple list.

In high school, he won everything there was to win in Illinois high school competition, claiming titles in XC, 1600m, and 3200m, as well as anchoring the State Record 4x800m. He then went to the University of Wisconsin for one year before deciding to move to Portland to go all-in on his running career, moving with Coach Jerry Schumacher and being one of the original members of the now Bowerman Track Club.

In today's conversation, Evan goes through his upbringing in the sport from winning a Mustang by breaking five minutes in the mile to setting state records along the way. He then discusses his professional career and all the different elements, the highs, and the lows, that have shaped who he is today. We also touch on his past year of being a dad, the craziest BTC workouts he's witnessed, and wether or not he thinks he has the best hair in Track & Field.

My guest for this episode is American record holder, Olympic silver medalist and world championship bronze medalist Evan Jager of the Nike Bowerman Track Club. I had him on as a guest back in 2019 as part of a panel with his teammates but this is the first time that he’s on as a guest solo. Things are much different now. He missed much of the last four years due to injury but clawed his way back in 2022 to qualify for the World Championships with a runner-up finish at the USATF Outdoor Championships in June. He made the world championship final a month later and finished sixth overall. He shares his thoughts on that performance, the season overall and what he’s learned throughout some of the lowest points in his career. We also touch on how he envisions the next two years going through the 2024 Paris Olympics if all goes well.
