Jakob Ingebrigtsen won his fourth consecutive European 5000m title on the opening night of the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham — running 13:15.29 with a 54.94 last 400 to overtake Florian Bremm on the home straight. It was his first race in 11 months, following an Achilles injury that ended his 2025 World Championships in Tokyo in the heats and kept him from competition through the rest of the year. He is now unbeaten in European finals across his career. Fifteen European gold medals. Fourth straight title in this event, dating back to 2018 when his older brother Henrik took silver in the same race.

Florian Bremm ran to European silver in the men's 5000m at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, finishing second behind Jakob Ingebrigtsen (13:15.29) in a race that came down to a home-straight sprint. The German veteran finished ahead of France's Etienne Daguinos and world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier — a result he says he genuinely didn't see coming.

The men's 5,000m at the Paavo Nurmi Games was relatively uneventful until the German duo of Florian Bremm and Frederik Ruppert turned on the jets in the second half of the race. They finished in 12:56.80 and 12:57.61, marks which are the 2nd and 3rd best times in German history, and 1st and 4th in the world this year. Watch the full replay here!
