It was supposed to be a showdown between Gabby Thomas, the Olympic 200m champion, and Marileidy Paulino, the Olympic 400m champion. But Salwa Eid Naser had other plans. The 2024 Olympic silver medalist blew the field away in 48.67 — an eye-popping time for April and a massive upset, as Paulino hadn’t lost a 400m since July 2023. Behind her, Thomas and Paulino battled for second, but it was Thomas who outlasted the Dominican star, clocking 49.14 to Paulino’s 49.35.
