“I tangoed way too much in the first half and didn’t have enough left to do it again when it counted. The marathoner who dances smart wins. I danced too early.”
My guest for today’s episode is Rory Linkletter: a Canadian Olympian, co-host of the Out and Back Podcast, and one of the most analytically sharp pro voices in the sport right now. At the 2026 Boston Marathon, he ran 2:06:04 for 14th place overall and the second-fastest marathon in Canadian history. He came in with the best build of his career — two sub-60-minute halves, workouts that never said no — and went out with the lead pack convinced that anything was possible. Then the bill came due.
In this conversation, Rory walks us through the moment the race turned, the internal negotiation of the final nine miles, the hamstring that seized on Boylston, and what he took from watching Clayton Young and Ryan Ford fly past him on Commonwealth Avenue.
But we also get Rory in full pundit mode: how to actually read the Boston results in the context of 2028, why he thinks Zouhair Talbi was operating on a different level than everyone around him, his declaration that John Korir is the best in the world right now, his take on the Scott Fauble super shoe debate, the Emma Bates sponsorship controversy, and why he thinks the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials will be the craziest in modern history.
He also previews Ottawa in five weeks, where he goes in with a simple mandate: run less with the heart, more with the head.

In this bonus episode of the Marathon Running Podcast, we bring you an exhilarating race recap of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trial Marathon that unfolded on February 3, 2024. Tune in to hear about the remarkable performance led by Zach Panning, who blazed through the first six miles at an impressive 4:49 mile pace, steering the lead pack alongside Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, the sole runners to meet the 2:08:10 Olympic standard prior to the race. The drama unfolds with unexpected twists, including the departure of seasoned runners like Scott Fauble, Abdi Abdirahman, and Sam Chelanga. Panning's relentless pace and strategic moves beyond the halfway point set the stage for a thrilling race. The intensity peaks as training partners Mantz and Young share a high-five, navigating the last loop with determination. The race for third adds another layer of excitement, culminating in Leonard Korir's impressive comeback in the final mile, securing a third-place finish. Although Korir faces the challenge of meeting the Olympic standard, his podium finish opens doors for potential Team USA representation in Paris. The episode delves into the gripping details, providing a front-row seat to this Olympic Trials spectacle. Don't miss out on this captivating recount with exclusive excerpts from the press conference, making it a must-listen for marathon enthusiasts and sports aficionados alike.

Heading into the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials, the consensus was that there was no consensus: Anyone could make the team.
And the races delivered big time, with topsy-turvy place changes and unexpected finishes on both the men’s and women’s side. In the men’s race, Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, the top two seeds in the field, did come away with the top two places, but the surprising news was who wasn’t in the mix, as two sub-2:09 seeds – Scott Fauble and Sam Chelanga – dropped out and reigning champion Galen Rupp struggled to a 16th-place finish.
Before Clayton Young’s 2:08:00 breakthrough in Chicago last fall, the ASICS runner’s marathon career had gotten off to a fairly rocky start. Young debuted in Atlanta in 2020 but only managed a 2:29:46 for 136th place, and in his first Chicago the following year, he was on track for a top-10 finish before falling only 300 meters from the finish line and losing 3 minutes and 5 places. Along the way, he’d picked up a few wins at shorter road races including a pair of national titles in 2023, but it wasn’t until last fall when he entered the conversation of potential Olympic contenders.
Young, who trains with Mantz in Utah, had a smoother buildup than his training partner (who dealt with a stress reaction in November) and seemed to be the most in control of all the leaders at each point in the race. He’s gotta get bonus points for sportsmanship as well, offering his training partner a pull from his water bottle after Mantz missed one of his own and hyping up the crowd even as he got passed in the final few strides.

On Saturday, Feb. 3, Orlando will host the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. The top three men and women who have met the qualifying standards and criteria will be named the U.S. Olympic team for the Paris Games.
This race features the first head-to-head matchup over the marathon distance by American record holder Emily Sisson and former record holder Keira D'Amato. Five of the six members of the 2020 Olympic team are back as Galen Rupp, Molly Seidel, Aliphine Tuliamuk, Jake Riley and Abdi Abdirahman return to try and make another team. Conner Mantz and Scott Fauble remain two of the most consistent American men of the last Olympic cycle. CITIUS MAG's team (Chris Chavez, Kyle Merber, and Eric Jenkins) will preview all the top storylines and athletes to watch. Read our full previews for the elite races: https://citiusmag.com/ Show presented by HOKA | Stay up to date on the latest news and promotions from HOKA. Check them out here: https://www.hoka.com/
"I feel good about where I'm at. Everyone else is going to bring their 'A' game and I'm going to bring my 'A' game. I'm going to have to race to win. I don't think you race to get top three. I think you have to race to win and top three will be the consolation prize if you race aggressively and fearlessly."
Welcome back fan favorite Scott Fauble to the show. This is now his seventh appearance on the show. We’ve had a tradition of chatting after his big performances at the New York City or Boston Marathons over the years. We decided to chat ahead of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, where he’s expected to be one of the top contenders in the men’s race once again.
Scott owns a personal best of 2:08:52 from his seventh place finish at the 2022 Boston Marathon. He backed that up with another top American finish last year – again in seventh place. Last fall, he went to Berlin to chase the Olympic qualifying standard but had to drop out after 30K. We talk about that race and how he picked the pieces back up.
Scott’s been training hard in Boulder under coach Joe Bosshard. He’s been cranking the heat up in the treadmill room in the Team Boss gym and doing tons of heat training. He’s confident. He’s feeling good. I’m excited for everything going down in Orlando.

As Chris recovers from the marathon, Kyle Merber, Eric Jenkins and Mac Fleet took over the show for a special episode of "Office Hourse" – where we answer our followers, readers and listeners' questions.
We'll try and do more of these when we're all together in-person. Here are the questions answered in this week's episode:
– Do you like the way the U.S. selects its marathon team through the Olympic Trials system?
– How much alcohol do pros actually drink?
– What do you think is reasonable mileage for a "working runner" to attempt when aiming for a hypothetical sub-2:45 marathon PR?
– Why don't we host more professional cross country meets in the United States?
– Shouldn't pro runners practice racing without pacers more?
– What does it mean when pros say they "get work done" in their training or at races? Like PT/massage/chiropractor? Who is paying for that?
– Why is there a Bowerman Track Club exodus? What is happening?
– Is Kelvin Kiptum and his fast performance good for the sport?
– Why don't runners like Scott Fauble and Emma Bates run more races than marathons?
+ more

"I'm really, really proud of this one. I feel like I executed it better than I had a marathon before. I think it was my savviest marathon...I understand I did really well and I made all the right choices. All of the measures of success I met. I don't necessarily have the joy. It's more pride right now."
Scott Fauble is back on the podcast for the 7th time, which might be a record for a recurring guest. It’s funny to go back and look at the archives because when he first came on this show in 2017, it was ahead of his marathon debut and now he’s one of the top U.S. marathoners. He just finished as the top American at the New York City Marathon in 2:13:35 to finish 9th overall. Earlier in the spring, he ran a personal best of 2:08:52 at the Boston Marathon and we did an episode after that performance. Let's unpack another top American performance.

On Sunday, the New York City Marathon returned to full capacity for the first time since 2019 and although the warmer conditions made it tough for runners across the board, the city was alive to celebrate everyone from the 1st to the 50,000th finisher. Kenyans swept the men’s and women’s pro races for the fourth time this year on the World Marathon Majors stage. The women’s race saw a major surprise as Sharon Lokedi, the former NCAA champion out of Kansas, won in 2:23:23 in her debut marathon. 33-year-old Evans Chebet came away with the victory in a wild and unpredictable men’s race in 2:08:41 to complete his Boston-New York title double in 2022. Aliphine Tuliamuk and Scott Fauble were the top Americans on the day. We chat through the pro races + Kyle's experience running the race + my first time on a TV broadcast.

Who Wore What? These Were the Top Shoes at the 2022 Boston Marathon
Ever since the first carbon-plated super shoes hit the roads, they’ve dominated the pro running conversation. With any speedy performance, we want to know: What latest shoe technology were they wearing?
That was certainly the case for Monday’s thrilling Boston Marathon where Peres Jepchirchir and Ababel Yeshaneh fought until the very last mile for their glory moment. In the end, it was Jepchirchir who out-kicked Yeshaneh 2:21.01 to 2:21.05.
In the context of super shoes, though, it may as well have been a head-to-head battle between Adidas and Nike, two Goliaths in the space. And though Nike had more racers finish in the top 15 wearing its shoes, the eventual 2022 Boston Marathon champion was wearing a pair of Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 2’s.
Curious what the other ultra-fast women were racing in on Marathon Monday? We tracked down the 6 shoes that were worn by the top 15 women.

"When I pass someone, I think: Poker face and pass them with authority. You don’t want to give someone hope. There are a lot of opportunities to feel sorry for yourself in a marathon. I don’t want someone that I’m going by to have a little something to fight for. I want to put them away immediately.”
Scott Fauble makes his return to the CITIUS MAG Podcast after taking seventh at the Boston Marathon in a personal best of 2:08:52, which moves him to No. 10 on the all-time U.S. list. He is the third-fastest active U.S. marathoner. This was a big performance for Scott since he shook things up a bit toward the end of 2020 by leaving his sponsor Hoka and parting ways with coach Ben Rosario and Northern Arizona Elite. He eventually teamed up with coach Joe Bosshard and spent the past few months in Colorado to prepare for Boston.
We catch up on the decision-making process behind that, his brilliant race tactics in Boston, how he’s shifted his thinking after a big performance and what’s got him excited about the future. We also go through a bunch of the listener questions that you submitted on Instagram.
