Episode 702: Vanessa Fraser on a 4:31 Dog Mile, Health Challenges, and the Marathon Ahead

    August 22, 2026

Friends, Vanessa Fraser is back on the podcast! She hasn’t been on the show in probably eight years, so I was really excited to reconnect with her and hear everything she’s been up to.

Vanessa ran at Stanford, where she was a 10-time All-American, before running professionally with the Bowerman Track Club. She has a 14:48 indoor 5K PR, spent some time training with Team Boss, went back to her college coach Coach Miltenberg, and now she’s announced that she’ll be working with David Roche as she sets her sights on the roads and, eventually, the marathon.

Vanessa’s career hasn’t gone exactly how she expected it would when she turned pro. She’s dealt with injuries and a frustrating medical condition that has made fueling incredibly difficult. She recently stepped away from her corporate job and is going all in on running, and I loved hearing her perspective on constantly striving for something that doesn’t always come to fruition in the way you imagined.

We talk about her years with Bowerman, Team Boss, going back to Coach Miltenberg, her relationship with Saucony, leaving the corporate world, her health struggles, and why she’s ready for this next chapter with David Roche.

And we have to talk about Gigi! Vanessa recently ran a 4:31 mile with her dog, setting an unofficial world record for the dog mile. I loved hearing about their relationship and how much fun Vanessa had getting to race as a team with her dog.

This conversation honestly helped me see some things in my own career in a fresh perspective. Vanessa made me feel really seen and cared for, and I hope she felt the same from me. I’m so grateful for conversations like this one, and I know you’re going to enjoy hearing more of Vanessa’s story and what she’s been up to over these past few years.

An Open & Honest Conversation On The Ups & Downs Of The Sport Of Running With Saucony Pro Vanessa Fraser

    April 17, 2024

Back on the podcast for her third appearance is the wise Vanessa Fraser!

A lot has happened in the past year for Vanessa and we break it all down in today's conversation.

Many professional runners talk about the importance of vulnerability in sharing the tougher moments of their careers, but very, very few do it. Vanessa is one of the few I know who is completely open about her full journey, and that always makes our conversations so insightful.

If you're not familiar with Vanessa, she holds PRs of 4:09 in the 1500m, 14:48 in the 5k, and 31:52 in the 10k. In college, she was one of the most storied runners in Stanford history, where she was a 7xAll-American, and her school record of 15:09 in the 5k still stands.

Vanessa currently runs for Saucony and Team BOSS.

In today's conversation, we discuss the brutal realities of running at a high level, the ups and downs of Vanessa's career, her new deal with Saucony, her ambitions for the future, and much more!

Venturing Beyond the Track: Vanessa Fraser on Her Dual Pursuits in Pro-Running and Venture Capital

    April 7, 2023

Back on the podcast, today is the one and only, Vanessa Fraser!

Vanessa is a pro runner for Nike and is coached by the legendary Shalane Flanagan. She holds PRs of 4:09 in the 1500m, 14:48 in the 5k, and 31:52 in the 10k. In college, she was one of the most storied runners in Stanford history, where she was a 7xAll-American, and her school record of 15:09 in the 5k still stands. Last year Vanessa began working at Benchmark Venture Capital, where she has thrived in this new environment while still pursuing her dreams on the track.

In this conversation, Vanessa takes me through her decision to go into the Venture Capitalist world, her reflections on setbacks, and her goals for running, life, and business this next year.

I always enjoy my conversations with Vanessa, and today was no exception! She always brings deep insights that impact me (and I'm confident they'll impact you too!)

In episode fifty-three of The Running Effect, I speak with Vanessa Fraser. Vanessa is a very accomplished runner who runs for Nike & the Bowerman Track Club. She most notably holds personal bests of 31:52 (10k) and 14:48 (5k). In high school, Vanessa was a two-time state champion in the state of California and helped her team to reach the state tournament for the first time in school history. During her time at Stanford, she helped her team finish runner-up twice in the DMR and still holds the school record of 15:09 in the 5k. Vanessa's college coach Chris Miltenburg would tell his athletes to "leave the team in a better place than you found it". Vanessa certainly did that and her impact on the Stanford program is still felt to this day. After Vanessa graduated, she signed with Nike and The Bowerman Track Club.

In this episode we dive deep into Vanessa's career; the ups, the downs, and everything in-between! Vanessa has battled a lot of adversity in her career, from massive Achilles surgery to not performing as well as she would have liked to in many races. Vanessa shares invaluable insights on confidence, trying to be process-oriented, learning from teammates, goal setting, and so much more! Vanessa embodies the definition of grit. Grit as defined by renowned psychologist Angela Duckworth is having, "passion and perseverance for long-term goals." Vanessa's passion and perseverance for the sport of running is truly felt in this episode.

I personally can't wait to see what the future holds for Vanessa!
