Yomif Kejelcha ran 56:51 at the Media Maratón Ciudad de Buenos Aires on Sunday to reclaim the half marathon world record — cutting 29 seconds off Jacob Kiplimo's 57:20 from Lisbon in March and 39 seconds off his own previous best. Tadese Worku took second in 59:20 for an Ethiopian 1-2. The splits are the story. Kejelcha went through 10K in 27:19 — 19 seconds behind Kiplimo's pace from Lisbon. Then something changed. He ran 13:22 for the 10-15K segment. Hit 15K in 40:41, eleven seconds ahead of Kiplimo. Passed 20K in 54:04. Closed the final kilometer in 2:32. The second 10K was 26:45. He wasn't just holding on. He was kicking. Listen to the full episode on The CITIUS MAG Podcast feed. Chris Chavez, Kyle Merber, and Preet Majithia are back with lots to unpack, including two Diamond Leagues, a half marathon world record, a robot, a Rupp record, and breaking news at the end of the episode.
Discussed in this episode:
– Yomif Kejelcha, 56:51 half marathon world record, Buenos Aires: Cuts 21 seconds off Jacob Kiplimo’s 57:20 from Lisbon in March (note: the Lisbon run hasn’t been formally ratified yet either). Kejelcha’s splits: 13:45 through 5K, 27:19 through 10K (19 seconds off world record pace), then he turns it on: 13:22 for 10K-to-15K, closes the final kilometer in 2:32.
– Silesia men’s 1500m — Ethan Strand wins in 3:30, 11th to first: Cole Hocker third (3:31.17, first race since Pre Classic, seven weeks off), Jakob Ingebrigtsen fourth (3:31.19, ten days after winning the European 5K), Phanuel Koech second (3:31.14). Splits: 1:50.4 last 800, 54.3 last lap, 26.4 last 200 (13.2/13.2 for Ethan). Strand ran wide in lane two for much of the race, avoided the traffic that boxed Cole and Jakob, and had a clear line in the final 100.
– Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s return to the 1500: Ten days since Europeans. Ran to the front from 600 to go, accelerated sharply in 13.7 for that section, closed at a level that wasn’t far off Ethan.
– World Athletics Seb Coe Super Invites — Budapest 1500 expands to 13: Both Josh Kerr and Jakob Ingebrigtsen confirmed. World Athletics broke their own rule because the matchup was too good to keep from fans.
– Silesia women’s 1500m — Tsigie Duguma wins in 3:55.06 (world lead, PB): Goes from fifth to first in the final 100 meters with her trademark last-50 burst.
– Lausanne 5000m — Americans go 2-3-4: Birhanu Balew wins in 12:57. Parker Wolfe second in 12:58.2, Nico Young third in 12:58.3, Graham Blanks fourth in 12:59.16. Parker Wolfe is the best American 5K runner right now.
– Lausanne men’s 800m — Wanyonyi wins in 1:42, first DL 800 victory of the year: Marco Arop went through 400 in 49.1 — deliberately trying to set up a world record attempt (Rudisha’s split was 49.2).
– Lausanne women’s 800m — Audrey Werro wins in 1:55.33, Femke Bol second in 1:55.41: Femke sets a new Dutch national record (tying, then surpassing Ellen van Langen’s 1992 Olympic final mark).
– Silesia women’s 100m — Melissa Jefferson-Wooden wins, 10.78: Extends unbeaten 100m streak to 10 races.
– Rai Benjamin confirms the double at World Ultimate: Flat 400 on day one, 400H semis and final on days two and three.
– The robot: Lightning, a humanoid robot built by smartphone maker Honor, ran 9.32 at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing — breaking Bolt’s world record of 9.58.
– Galen Rupp, 61:29 at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon: US 40+ record. Ninth place overall. Fastest half he’s run in six years.
– Looking ahead: Zurich Diamond League Thursday. Diamond League final in Brussels September 4-5. World Ultimate Championships September 11-13.

The two-hour marathon barrier is gone. At the 2026 London Marathon, Sebastian Sawe became the first person ever to run under two hours on a record-eligible course — and Yomif Kejelcha did it too, in his marathon debut.

In an emergency episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast, Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia react to one of the most historic moments in distance running: Sabastian Sawe becoming the first athlete to officially break two hours in the marathon in a record-eligible race, running 1:59:30 at the London Marathon. They break down how it happened: highlighting the blistering negative split, the late-race surge, and the role of Yomif Kejelcha pushing the pace in his debut. The conversation explores every factor behind the performance: race tactics, depth of field, super shoe innovation, fueling, weather, and the psychological barrier finally falling. What does this mean for the future of the marathon? How repeatable is sub-2? And how do we process this? Jacob Kiplimo returned to Lisbon on Sunday and reclaimed his place in the record books, running 57:20 at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon to set a new half marathon world record. Kiplimo's 57:20 takes 10 seconds off Yomif Kejelcha's official world record of 57:30, set in Valencia in 2024. Kiplimo himself had held the previous record at 57:31, also set in Lisbon, in 2021. With no pacemakers, Kiplimo ran the first 10km in 27:00 alongside Kenyan duo Nicholas Kipkorir and Gilbert Kiprotich. At 15km, sensing the pace had dipped, Kiplimo surged — covering the next 5km in 13:31 and never looking back. Kipkorir finished second in 58:08, with Kiprotich third in 58:59. Kiplimo had actually run 56:42 in Barcelona last year, which is a jaw-dropping time that would have shattered the record by over a minute but it could not be ratified because the race conditions didn't fully comply with World Athletics rules. Sunday's mark is official. "It feels like a goal that’s within my grasp of achieving. Not only am I stronger and smarter than I was last year, but I feel like I've come a long way and will be able to attack this race with a lot more confidence to chase the world record. When I went (to Millrose) for the first time, I was just chasing the American record. So I feel like changing that mindset, just seeing how far I've come, it feels like a very real possibility at this point."
U.S. outdoor mile record holder Yared Nuguse will return to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City for the 116th Millrose Games to defend his men’s Wanamaker Mile title.
Last year, Nuguse made his Millrose Games debut and won and set a U.S. indoor mile record of 3:47.38. He barely missed the world record of 3:47.01 set by Yomif Kejelcha in 2019.
Nuguse put together a career year in 2023 with a 7:28.23 for 3000m indoors (American record); a personal best of 3:29.02 for 1500m (the fastest performance by an American-born runner); 3:43.97 outdoor mile (an American record and the fourth-fastest performance in history; a victory at the London Diamond League 1500m and a fifth place finish in the 1500m final at the World Championships. Most recently, he ran 3:56.58 at the Merrie Mile in Honolulu to come just .45 seconds shy of breaking the road mile world record.
The Millrose Games is the sixth stop on the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold calendar.
Livestream and television broadcast details will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more Millrose Games athlete announcements as the pro fields come together.
