Runners Of NYC: McCarren Park Edition
The Runners of NYC Podcast is back in Brooklyn. This time, Patryk Odedina flies solo on a Wednesday night at the McCarren Park track, with speed workouts already underway and the New York City Marathon coming up.
Same concept as always. We post up, see who’s willing to stop, and let the conversations go wherever they go.
Kara Dudley takes us from a first half marathon on the Rockaway Beach boardwalk, where she beat her cousin and won a pair of size 11 shoes, to breaking 2:50 by two seconds in Sydney. Her brother even 3D-printed her a trophy for earning her seventh World Marathon Majors star.
Jisan from Queens still remembers the route of the two-mile run he reluctantly agreed to do with a friend. He gets into how that first run gave him some direction, how ChatGPT helped him make sense of interval workouts, and what a bout of tendinitis taught him about backing off.
Will grew up by Yankee Stadium and started running along the Brooklyn waterfront because he missed the sunlight. He hated it for six months. Now he’s tapering for his first NYC Marathon and has already told his family where he’ll need a boost.
Claire talks about finding her way back to the track after a college back injury, making friends through sprint practice, and watching her mom get into run-walking.
Connor from Woodlawn gives us the short version of how meeting two guys at a 4x400 turned into a weekly sprint meetup called Fast Fridays.
Wes closes us out with why he loves pacing other runners and why crossing the finish line with his wife at her first marathon in Tokyo meant more to him than any time on the clock.
