First run in the Omius cooling headband. It was pretty hot out, and my schedule made me have to do my workout in the afternoon. Perfect situation for this head-turning head-cooling device.
The whole thing is quite different than I was expecting. The cooling pieces are like little pieces of carved stone. There’s twenty pieces with 9 little pillars on each piece. (I thought that this would be made out of metal bristles, like a grill brush)
When you put it on and get it wet, it’s does feel cool (although I used cold water to douse myself). But once you’re running, it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing an ice pack. Rather, it kind of disappears (figuratively, not literally), and it just makes everything feel less hot. I mean, the air is still thick with humidity. And I’m still sweating intensely. But I didn’t get a heat headache during or after the session. And it just felt like I could run. I have a feeling that there may be a sweet spot for intensity where the headband works best. Threshold repeats might be too much for the headband to keep up - a longer run with marathon effort miles might be just right.
But is it just a placebo? Is it meaningfully better than an ice bandana? I’ll be doing some more testing.
