Race with me at the McHenry Lakefront 5k. This is a local 5k that I’ve run a few times now, and there’s always a lot of local high school cross country kids and other fast young men and women. The course is flat and fast, but the tangents get kinda wacky because they don’t actually close the streets down (fortunately, there just aren’t a lot of cars in this sleepy lakeside neighborhood).
I really restrained myself in the first half mile (I noticed at one point I was running under 6:00/mi pace 🤦🏻♂️). Then, just after the first mile, I tucked in behind two regular adults as we got a tiny bit of a headwind.
By mile two, it was my turn to lead the pack. but soon, the other two men dropped back. With about 400m to go, I caught up to a young kid and tried to get him to run along with me. But I ended up coming down the chute by myself.
Chip time of 19:36 is not a PB by any means, but it’s faster than what I ran for this race last year. Plus, this race was part of my first 70 mile week in a long time (last four weeks have been around 68 miles though).
Metaspeed Edge Tokyo were great for this race. This was my fastest 5k of 2025. My next fastest was in the MetaSpeed Edge Paris a couple months ago.
Finally, I did get defeated by about 5 of the local XC kids. I was 10th overall and the oldest person in the top 10. The next oldest person in the top 10 of this race was two decades younger.
