#188 - The Secrets Behind Kenyan Running Domination with Author Sarah Gearhart

On this week's podcast, I'm joined by Sarah Gearhart, an accomplished writer and marathon runner who has completed 14 marathons. Her work as a sports journalist has been featured in esteemed publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, ESPN, Runner's World, and many others. Sarah's latest book, titled "We Share the Sun: The Incredible Journey of Kenya's Legendary Running Coach Patrick Sang and the Fastest Runners on Earth," showcases her expertise in the field. The focus of Sarah's book is Patrick Sang, the renowned coach behind Eliud Kipchoge, widely recognized as the world's top marathon runner. However, what sets Sang apart is the holistic approach he takes with all his runners, including Kipchoge. Sarah's firsthand experience at Sang's Kaptagat training camp provided her with a unique understanding of this tight-knit community, which remains largely unknown and misunderstood by the general public. Nevertheless, it sets a remarkable example that all runners can draw inspiration from. During our conversation, Sarah and I explore various topics related to her book, "We Share the Sun," including: What motivated her to write about Patrick Sang and the athletes under his guidance. The reason why Patrick Sang is often referred to as a life coach rather than just a running coach. How the culture fostered by Sang contributes to the success of his athletes. The immersive experiences of Sang's runners and how these contribute to their unparalleled achievements. How Sarah's perspective on running has transformed since her time spent in Kenya. #177 - Keith Mueller | Improving Endurance with Strength and Mobility
#177 - Keith Mueller | Improving Endurance with Strength and Mobility

About Keith - In His Own Words: An Ohio native, and the son of a teacher. I have no pedigree or resume as a competitive athlete. Yet, I’ve learned how to be a person through covering ground on foot or two wheels, tinkering in the gym, and being coached by people who paid attention and told me the truth.  After an undergraduate degree, I’ve eschewed classic education and broad-but-shallow certifications in favor of the experience and ideas my internal compass points me towards. As a young coach I served group class moms, assisted a 5x state champion cross country team, built long-term personal training relationships, advised weekend warrior runners, and supported those in pain who were trying to reclaim their physicality. When I discovered someone I could learn from, I’ve hired them, traveled to them, or consumed every piece of published writing I could. In 2021 my wife and I relocated to Boulder, CO. A point on the map that’s drawn endurance athletes for decades. Higher Ground Athletics is an idea that I can’t escape; That training for endurance sport has yet to fully arrive at a holistic understanding that will result in the shortest, straightest path to an athlete’s potential. My work is the pursuit of that idea.  Website: https://www.highergroundathletics.com/ The Path Online Strength Template: https://www.highergroundathletics.com/training2 Join The Relaxed Running Training Hub https://www.relaxedrunning.com/thetraininghub

Running 250km through the Sahara Desert with Marcus Smith
Running 250km through the Sahara Desert with Marcus Smith

I am an entrepreneur, motivational speaker extreme athlete and coach. With a clear vision of making peoples lives better through health, culture and environment, I have developed and established two successful businesses, including international performance company, InnerFight; and Paleo food provider, Smith St Paleo. With a competitive sporting background, I played professional rugby from the age of 18, with a major highlight being my participation in the 2009 IRB Rugby Sevens World Cup. Retiring from the game in 2010, I moved to CrossFit and endurance challenges which I still take part in and love. I believe that developing mental strength through physical challenges is one of the keys to a successful life and have multiple challenges and ultramarathons to my name including: 30 marathons in 30 days in 2018, 250km self-supported across the Sahara desert in 2015, 230km self supported through Kenya in 2019, crossing the island of Corisica on foot with 13,000m of elevation in 2018. In 2018 I was served up a truly amazing experience when I was training to set a world record in ultra cycling and was hit by a truck at 65kmph resulting in the biggest fight I had ever had, the fight for my life. I looked death straight in the face and decided it was not for me. (check out my documentary here) My experiences in these challenges and my near death experience has helped me coach; numerous athletes ranging from ultra endurance events to just being able to run 1 mile, from those looking to find their purpose in life to high levels CEO’s. Prior to establishing my first business InnerFight, I spent 10 years in the sporting goods industry, with over five years as a sales director at market leader, Adidas and my final year at Nike.
